Position: Transit Police Officer

Reports to: Transit Police Chief/Supervisor

Job Summary:
The Transit Police Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of passengers, employees, and property within the transit system. This position involves enforcing laws and regulations, preventing and investigating crimes, responding to emergencies, and providing a visible presence to deter criminal activity. The Transit Police Officer will work collaboratively with other law enforcement agencies, transit personnel, and the general public to maintain a safe and secure transit environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Patrol assigned areas within the transit system, including stations, platforms, trains, and other transit facilities to detect and deter criminal activity.
2. Enforce local, state, and federal laws, ordinances, and transit regulations to maintain order and safety.
3. Respond promptly to calls for service, emergencies, and incidents, including accidents, disturbances, medical emergencies, and security breaches.
4. Conduct thorough investigations of crimes, accidents, and other incidents within the transit system, collect evidence, interview witnesses, and prepare detailed reports.
5. Apprehend and detain individuals suspected of committing crimes, and assist in the arrest and processing of offenders.
6. Provide assistance and support to transit system passengers, employees, and other individuals in need, including offering directions, resolving conflicts, and providing general information.
7. Monitor surveillance systems, identify suspicious activities, and take appropriate action to mitigate potential threats.
8. Conduct security screenings and inspections of individuals, baggage, and packages in accordance with transit security protocols.
9. Collaborate with other law enforcement agencies, transit personnel, and stakeholders to coordinate security initiatives and respond to joint operations.
10. Attend and participate in training sessions, workshops, and seminars to enhance job knowledge and skills related to law enforcement, transit operations, and emergency response.
11. Maintain accurate records, prepare incident reports, and testify in court when required.
12. Support the development and implementation of crime prevention programs and initiatives within the transit system.
13. Maintain a professional demeanor, appearance, and conduct at all times, adhering to the transit police code of ethics and departmental policies.

Qualifications:
1. High school diploma or equivalent (GED). Some college coursework in criminal justice or related field preferred.
2. Completion of an accredited police academy and possession of a valid law enforcement certification.
3. Minimum two years of experience in law enforcement, preferably with experience in transit or public transportation security.
4. Must possess a valid driver's license and have a clean driving record.
5. Strong knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, and agency rules related to law enforcement.
6. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse populations.
7. Ability to exercise sound judgment, make quick decisions, and remain calm in high-stress situations.
